Choosing an option

What is the difference between Relay and Proxy?

Relay gives you a separate dashboard for selected lights, readings and scripts. Setup is simpler: add our YAML configuration, reload the REST commands and save the generated automation. No router changes needed.

Proxy opens your full Home Assistant, including its existing dashboards and settings. It needs a public IPv4 address, a router rule that allows only our server to connect, and Home Assistant’s trusted-proxy settings. It does not work behind CGNAT.

An entity is one control, reading or action in Home Assistant, such as a light, temperature sensor or script.

Both need Home Assistant running at home. Choose the right option or compare all four plans.

Which plan fits my home?

Start with Free Relay if you want selected controls without changing your router. It includes 5 entities with updates every 60 seconds. Standard supports 100 entities with 15-second updates; Large supports 200 with 10-second updates. You can upgrade the same Relay later.

Choose Proxy if you want the full Home Assistant interface and your home meets its network requirements. Test your connection before buying or compare plans and prices.

How do I get started?

For Relay, create a free account, choose your entities and follow the four setup steps. You’ll copy a configuration block, reload the REST commands, then save the automation. For Proxy, check your home connection first, then follow the router and Home Assistant setup steps. Open the guide for your product.

Do I need this if I already have remote access?

Relay can give you a simpler view of the things you use most. If your current setup already does everything you need, you may not need another service. Compare remote-access approaches.

Is this Home Assistant Cloud?

No. myhomeassistant.top is independent of Home Assistant and Nabu Casa. It offers its own Relay and Proxy products. Compare remote-access methods.

What if I need full access without port forwarding?

Compare Home Assistant Cloud and a suitable VPN; Relay does not become the full interface. VPN requirements vary by provider and network. Explore remote-access methods.

Getting connected

Do I need to change my router?

Relay: no router changes or incoming port needed. Home Assistant sends updates and collects control requests over a secure connection it starts from home.

Proxy: yes. You need a public IPv4 address and a port-forwarding rule that lets only our server connect to Home Assistant. Check the requirements.

Can I test Full Proxy before buying?

Yes. A free account is enough for the Proxy port and web-response test; no purchase or Home Assistant access token is needed. The check tells you whether our server can reach your home. After setup, open Home Assistant to test your dashboards and devices. Test my home connection.

What if my ISP uses CGNAT?

CGNAT means your internet provider shares one public IP address between customers. Relay works behind CGNAT when Home Assistant can reach our service over HTTPS. You get your selected entities on a separate dashboard.

Proxy does not work behind CGNAT. Ask your provider for a public IPv4 address that accepts incoming connections, or consider another way to get full access. Read the CGNAT explanation.

Do I need a certificate at home?

Relay does not need a certificate installed at home. For Proxy, your personal web address already uses HTTPS, but the separate connection from our server to your home is not encrypted by default. A valid, trusted certificate at your Home Assistant address lets you use HTTPS for that connection too. Understand what is protected.

Is every connection encrypted?

Your browser connects securely to our service, and Relay sends updates and collects control requests over HTTPS.

With Proxy, the connection from our service to your Home Assistant is not encrypted by default. Someone who intercepts the traffic could read it, including sign-in details. HTTPS with a valid, trusted home certificate can protect it. Allowing only our server’s IP address limits access but does not encrypt the connection.

Our service can read and process Proxy traffic even when both connections use HTTPS. Read the security guide.

Do you need my Home Assistant access token?

No. Proxy checks whether it can reach Home Assistant without an access token. Relay and the optional Proxy IP-update automation use their own connection tokens, already included in the generated code. Understand the different credentials.

Why did my connection check fail?

Follow the result shown by the check: the port may be closed, the forwarding destination may be wrong or the ISP may block incoming access. Confirm Home Assistant works locally before changing more settings. Use the router troubleshooting guide.

What happens when my internet address changes?

Relay keeps connecting from home, so no extra IP-update setup is needed.

For Proxy, use a DDNS hostname that already tracks your home’s address, or add the IP-update automation from your Proxy settings. A fixed public IP needs neither. We check for a changed home address about every five minutes and test a new address before using it. Outage monitoring is separate: it checks the connection about once a minute. See which option you need.

Everyday use

What does my personal web address open?

A Proxy address opens your Home Assistant; a paid Relay address opens that plan’s Relay dashboard. Each paid plan includes one available personal subdomain. Free Relay has no personal subdomain. Manage addresses in your account.

Can I use the Companion app?

Yes, with a compatible Full Proxy connection. Test the personal address in a browser first, then follow the app’s setup instructions. A Relay address cannot be its server address. Read the official Companion guide.

Do my automations move to your servers?

No. Home Assistant and its automations stay on your equipment. Automations that depend only on working local devices can still run without remote access; internet-dependent actions still need their connections.

What happens if home loses power or internet?

Proxy cannot open an offline Home Assistant. Relay shows the last received readings with their age and warns when they are out of date. You can still request a change; it waits for Home Assistant and expires after five minutes if not collected. Old readings do not prove the home is online. Check a Relay connection.

Can I get an email if my connection stops working?

Yes, paid plans include outage and recovery emails using the email saved in your account. Relay Free does not include them. We watch for Relay updates and check Proxy connections about once a minute. We send an alert when a problem lasts at least ten minutes. Email delivery can take longer. These checks monitor the connection, not every device. Open a connection’s Alert settings from Connections.

Can my household use it?

Yes. Relay Standard includes 1 additional dashboard login; Large includes 4. Each user can view all selected entities and use enabled controls, including any locks and covers you allow. They cannot change setup, manage users or access billing. Free Relay does not include extra logins.

Open Shared dashboard access in Relay settings to add a user. Share their sign-in details and the displayed dashboard link privately; no invitation email is sent. With Proxy, each person uses their own Home Assistant account.

How do I know a Relay action worked?

“Sent” means Home Assistant collected the action. A later update shows the state Home Assistant reports. Check the device itself when it matters. For scripts, check Home Assistant to see whether they finished. You can cancel only before an action is collected. Read the dashboard status guide.

Can I change my Relay entities?

Yes. Save the new selection in Relay setup, then replace and save your existing Home Assistant automation with the newly generated code. This needs no configuration-file edit or restart. Follow the update steps.

Does “last contact” mean my full dashboard works?

No. The IP-update automation tells us your home’s internet address. Its last-contact time only shows when that automation last reached us. It does not confirm that all your dashboards and devices work. Check the Proxy connection status, then open your Home Assistant address. View your connections.

Can I use Proxy for cameras and backups?

Ordinary dashboard use and occasional camera viewing are intended uses. Continuous CCTV relaying, general file hosting and large backup transfers are outside the service’s intended use. Read the resource limits.

Plans and payments

Can I try it with my own Home Assistant for free?

Yes. Free Relay includes 5 entities, with updates and action checks every 60 seconds. No credit card required. No time limit. It uses your account dashboard without a personal subdomain. Follow the Relay setup guide.

How much does it cost?

Free Relay costs $0. Relay Standard is $60 USD a year, Large is $108 USD a year and Full Proxy is $72 USD a year. Paid plans are charged yearly; PayPal subscriptions renew annually until cancelled. Compare plans and what’s included.

Is a paid Relay plan useful for a small selection?

Yes. Paid Relay also gives you faster updates, a personal subdomain, outage alerts and additional dashboard users. Standard checks every 15 seconds and includes 1 additional user; Large checks every 10 seconds and includes 4. Compare all four plans.

What if I need more than 200 Relay entities?

Relay supports up to 200 entities per plan. Proxy opens the full interface if your home has a public IPv4 address and you can set up the required router rule. Compare remote-access options.

How do I stop annual payments?

Open Billing in your account, choose the subscription and turn off automatic renewal; you can also manage automatic payments in PayPal. Access continues until the end of the paid period. Cancelling does not automatically refund a payment. Read the cancellation terms.

Can I connect more than one home?

Yes. You can keep multiple independent paid plans in one account, each with its own product and personal address. Every account has one Free Relay allowance. Manage your connections.

What happens when a paid plan ends?

Access through that plan stops. For Relay, new updates and controls stop, and cleanup removes its configuration, connection token, latest readings and waiting commands. A request already collected by Home Assistant may still run. For Full Proxy, new connections stop and cleanup removes the route; an existing connection may remain open until it closes. This does not delete your Home Assistant or change your other independent plans. Keep local access available. Read the service terms.
